Seng wiped her brow and bit into her cigarette driving through the busy, tight streets of Thailand's capital.
"Dammit, it's too hot around here. Why couldn't you pick somewhere not fucking here?"
All around her, the vibrant nightlife could be seen in bustling crowds, bright lights, and loud music, all arguing for attention in the dark.
The man sitting beside her growled in discomfort.
“Could you quit it with the smoking? It's bad enough with the exhaust.”
“Shut up, Ruskie, I'm trying to focus. Where is this place?”
The driver took a draw and looked around.
Bumper-to bumper for ages.
'Ruskie' squinted out the window and then turned to Seng. “Not more than two blocks from here. Park already and let's go.” He was sweating as well, having his arms crossed and wearing a black, leather jacket.
“Park?” The woman snorted. “Not if you want to get robbed between now and then.”
“Just trust me.”
“Oh, I trust you, alright. It's them I don't trust.”
This raised an eyebrow from the man, causing him to stroke his beard. “What? I was told you didn't believe in stereotypes.”
“I never take the subways in California either, chuckles.”
After about five minutes, the Russian signaled towards one of the clubs. “This one.”
Looking up, Le Hai could see the words 'Lucky Mermaid' written on the side of the sketchy bar, with the neon fish-tailed woman's breasts on full display.
“Wow, you sure picked a shitty place.”
“Shut up. It's safe to talk there.”
“Because nobody with a brain shows up?”
“Just park.”
Inside, an argument was taking place.
“Look, I don't care how goddamn cheap it is, I'm married, and that's that.”
David Hamilton sneered at the pimp in front of him with disgust. “In my opinion, it's a travesty this building still stands. I thought this was an actual bar, not a goddamn whorehouse as well.”
The keeper of the counter began to sweat, clearly intimidated by the larger man. “P-please, this is simply a misunderstanding. No-one blames you for your mistake.”
“Mistake? Your hiring policies are a mistake.” The ex-soldier pointed at some of the dancers. “You get schoolgirls to 'work' for you, too? That's not what a woman's body looks like.”
“N-no! I made certain! All of these women are of legal age!” He bowed slightly in an attempt to appear genuine, but it was ignored.
“You're disgusting. If my contact doesn't show up in five minutes, I'm leaving -and calling the police, too.”
“What got up your ass?” Sang stepped inside, followed by the clearly-frustrated Russian.
David stared at the recent arrival. “You're E2?” His eyes fell to the man. “We are not meeting in here, Rooke. No way.”
Rooke was surprised. “What's the problem? I thought you'd like it.”
The reaction was one of stunned disbelief, followed by gritted teeth. “I AM MARRIED WITH A CHILD YOU DUNCE.” Taking a breath, Hamilton continued. “I don't want to know why you frequent illegal strip clubs, but count me out. We are going to an actual bar with actual food and actual culture. Why you thought this was a good idea is beyond my comprehension.”
“You're not gonna find a lot of culture in Bangkok at night, old man.” Sang puffed her cigarette. “Unless sex is considered culture.”
“Who are you calling 'old man'?” David fumed. “Rooke here's a decade my senior!”
Le Hai shrugged. “Well, he's also not completely uptight.”
“Because expecting to meet somewhere decent is uptight, huh?” He rolled his eyes.
Rooke waved them down. “Calm yourself. I will honor your request to meet another place. There is a restaurant across the street that makes the best Pad Thai in the world.”
“What's your name, anyways, old man?” The young woman began to step outside.
Looking around, David whispered, “David Hamilton. What's yours?”
Sang nearly choked. “What?”
“Don't make me repeat myself.” He looked around nervously. “Too many people.”
“No, wait. You served, right?” Le Hai stopped smoking as they walked.
“Yeah, why?”
“Did you bring a family from Vietnam to America?”
Hamilton halted his pace, his gaze growing questioning. “Who's asking?”
With a little cough of nervousness at the sudden re-introduction, she replied, “The little girl you saved.”
David's eyes bugged out. “What the-”
Rooke motioned them to cross the street. “More talking later, dammit! Let's go!”
