So I finished Gurren Lagann.
I could say a lot about that show, I really could. But we'd be here forever if I did. So I'll just say this:
Viral is awesome, really wish he'd done more.
He has the best theme, undoubtedly.
And despite what I thought at first, Kittan turned out to be a real badass in the end. Rememeber when he walked towards that Anti-Spiral bullshit with just a shotgun? Radical.
Honorable mention of cool people: Everyone. They're all cool.
One complaint:Yoko started off cool, but just became hopelessly generic and irrelevant by the end. I mean, look at her space suit outfit towards the end. That's just ridiculous.
That being said, 11/10, best anime I've ever seen.

So Viral's theme is called "Nikopol", right Enki Bilal is a French author who wrote a series of graphic novels often called the Nikopol Trilogy. In it, the Egyptian gods are real, and are depicted as half human, half animal hybrids: Coincidence? Probably not. I mean, Viral's a beastman so it'd make sense...

Oh come on! This one makes sense.

Post by Residisi on Jun 15, 2015 4:57:35 GMT -5
If that makes sense, then here's this:
Hitler had 2 eyes
Simon had 2 eyes
2+2=4
Illuminati triangle has 3 sides
4-3=1
Illuminati triangle has one eye
So Simon's Drill is Illuminati confirmed

This is the last thing I'm gonna say about the Ryuko/Simone discussion so don't expect anything more from me.
I don't think that Simone and Ryuko have very similar arcs, but I'll try my best to compare and contrast here and keep an open mind. Hopefully I'll end up with a good conclusion by the end.
If this is barely readable sorry but I'm tired.
Spoilers for both series incoming.
Simone.
At the beginning of his story, Simone is a nobody. He's cowardly, can't stick up for himself, and has no self confidence to speak of. However, he meets up with Kamina, who is in stark contrast to Simone. He's proactive, doesn't take shit from anyone, and is always confident in his abilities. Kamina takes Simone under his wing as they depart for the surface world. Throughout this first part of the show, Simone stays in Kamina's shadow, and his personal growth is somewhat minimal (but still there). Simone himself is defined by Kamina's presence, relagated to his shadow. After Kamina leaves, Simone finds himself in a bit of emotional turmoil, for obvious reasons. However, finding a friend in Nia, he is motivated once more to continue fighting. I still have the opinion that Nia is one of the best characters in the show, not just for her personality alone, but how she changes Simone's character for the better. Now, believing in himself and having something to fight for, Simone finds the power to take down LordGenome. He frees the planet and he's a hero. I'll be honest, I can't remember as much post time skip, so if I get stuff wrong here, I apologize. Simone is living happily with Nia in the rad future city, but Nia is imprisoned by the Anti Spirals and everything begins to fall apart. Simone attempts to fix the problem using Gurren Lagann, but forehead kid is an asshole and sentences him to death for his undying fighting spirit. This next part is really fuzzy but eventually everyone joins up and they go into space. At this point the show goes full space opera and it's all about believing in yourself, evolving past the person you were before, remembering those who came before you, and shit like that. In the end, Simone turns out to be a pretty cool guy, who believes strongly in the human race and will do anything for those around him.
Ryuko.
4kids version.
RILEY MATTHEWS IS THE NEW KID IN SCHOOL! HOWEVER, SHE'S HERE TO FIND OUT WHO PUT HER INNOCENT DAD IN JAIL! SHE ATTENDS THE HIGHSCHOOL OF WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, WHERE THE BULLIES ARE TO FIND OUT THE BIGGEST SECRETS! SHE MEETS THE TOP FOUR BULLIES : GREGORY! "Every student that misbehaves must be disciplined!" INIDO! "I'll hack your computers in seconds." SANJAY! "I can take on one hundred students and still win!" and Jacky Z! "This battle needs a little more Beethoven! Ah, music to my ears!" BUT THE BIGGEST BULLY OF ALL AT THE SCHOOL IS STACEY KRISTEN! "Can you take on all four of my top bullies, Riley?" BUT THERE'S NO WAY RILEY CAN TAKE THEM ALL ON HER OWN! HER BEST FRIEND, MANNY MANNISON, "You got this, Riley! I, Manny Mannison, have got you covered!", AND TEACHER, ARTHUR MCDOODLE, "Believe in yourself, Riley!", ARE THERE ON THE SIDELINES TO CHEER HER ON! "My friends are here to support me, because that's what friends do!"
real version.
At the beginning of her story, Ryuko is not a very pleasant person to be around. A juvenile delinquent due to her distant relationship with her father, she is rude, angry, and stubborn. She comes to Honoji with her only purpose being to find her father's murderer. She trusts no one, wants no help in her quest, and essentially challenges the whole school without a second thought. However, without her magic talking clothing, Senketsu, her mission would be impossible. Senketsu's personality is a little vague early on in the show, as Ryuko doesn't actually know much about him, and she only considers him a tool to find her father's killer. But within time, it is shown that he is a very caring figure, and Ryuko forges a strong relationship with him through their battles against the other students. The other early relationship Ryuko forges is with Mako, whom she is initially uncomfortable around, but Mako's attachment eventually led to a strong friendship between the two. So, people fights, people are defeated, and she meets more people. A common thread through all of her relationships is that Ryuko initially pushes everyone away from her, or is at least uncomfortable around them. Her teacher, Tsumugu, the student council, and especially Satsuki. Her past taught her to never trust others, that no one except herself could be trusted, which explains her headstrong and stubborn attitude at the beginning of the anime. However, Ryuko needs the help of all of these people in order to fight the real villains of the show, Nui, Ragyo, and the Life Fibers. At some point or another, nearly every character in the show helps out Ryuko in some way. She learns that being a lone wolf isn't the right way to solve your problems, and that the bonds of others around you are an important thing. One of my favorite scenes in the show is the first time she tries to call Satsuki "Nee-San". It's obvious she's trying to reach out to her sister, to form a bond, but the experiences of her past won't let her. By the last episode, Ryuko has befriended nearly the whole cast and co-operated with them to solve the problem. Her demeanor is much different now, she's still determined, but she's much more calm and mature. However, with the problem solved, Senketsu has to leave Ryuko.
comparing/contrasting
since I laid out each character's story, let's compare and contrast. What is Simone's arc all about? Why, it's about believing in yourself, forging your own path, and not taking what anyone else tells you. He goes from being in the shadow of his mentor to creating his own legend. Piercing the Heaven's and all of that. Now, what's is Ryuko's arc all about? In my mind, it's all about forging relationships with others and the power of bonds. She goes from anti-social, angry, and distrusting of others, to accepting others, forging powerful bonds with others, and becoming an adult. In my mind, these are very different arcs. It's almost as if the other is too comfortable with the final step of the other's journey. Simone, at the beginning, is much too comfortable with relying on the help of others, and Ryuko, at the beginning, is much to comfortable with forging her own path and not taking what others tell her. Interesting dynamic, really.
Loss of mentor character
The loss of the mentor character is a very important thing for the two arcs of these characters, but when it happens and how it affects the characters is very different. The loss of the mentor character occurs between the beginning and the end of Simone's arc. It's quite literally the end of Simone's world when it happens; Kamina was everything to him, and the thought of him not being around is terrifying to him. However, through his loss, he learns to be strong, for himself and those around him (Thanks Nia). The loss of the mentor character happens at the very, very end of Ryuko's arc. I've been using the term "mentor character", but for Ryuko, it's not so much the loss of a mentor, but the loss of a partner. Senketsu was the first bond Ryuko made in her time at honoji, and he was the one who helped her through all her hard times and gave her strength when she needed it most. In a literal sense, Senketsu had to go because of the life fiber destruction, but in the literary sense, Senketsu had to leave because Ryuko had grown up. She had created relationships with others around her, came to terms with her past, and solved her problems, so there was no more use for him. It was heart wrenching for sure, but it seems that Ryuko had simply outgrown her old clothes.
conclusion
wow, this hasn't turned out like I meant for it to at all. I was gonna try to explain why I liked Ryuko more than Simone, but it turned into an analysis of the their personal arcs. Whatever. It all comes down to personal taste, and each character has their own strengths and flaws. I just prefer Ryuko because I feel like her arc was more interesting than Simone's, and I could relate to her more. That's all.
